I think it is a good preview of what is to come with Emile Zola. If you do the Rougon-Macquart series then definitely the Fortunes of the Rougons. I have read them essentially in the recommended order-skipping around a bit-but, after having read most of them, I actually think that reading them in the order written is a better idea. I feel they get progressively worse. Personally, I like the more subtle books. The books that don't spend all their time talking about sex and affairs and women with their legs spread to heaven. L'Assommoir is one of my favorites. Little bit of sex, good themes, realistic ending. (less)
