The point was in three parts:
1. you are supposed to be horrified by the realization of this alternate timeline's secret and how ordinary everything seems in light of the events that must have occurred
2. you would then realize that we DO live in this fictional timeline. it is not a fiction at all. This thought experiment merely swapped two similar historical events, one we teach as the atrocity that it is, and one we do not teach that way (because it is our atrocity). In our reality, the very same results came about from the indigenous American holocaust. We teach it the same way, we regard it the same way. it happened just like that.
3. the protagonist is made to conclude out loud that no one will care about his realization. Indeed, it is not easy to make anyone notice but the ending proves that in fact people do care. This again mirrors our reality. on the surface, no one cares that such horrors exist in our past and we do not think about them, but indeed people do care, and will learn.(less)
