Why is this considered a good or even great book? I mean the question seriously, not as sarcasm. I read the book and discovered it was classified YA, which may have influenced my opinion. I thought it was ok, but no more than that. Yet when i think of memoirs I've liked i keep going back to this. I would like to know why, from a critical point of view, this book is considered so good. I thought it gave a great sense of how it felt for them to be out in the world by themselves for the first time, feeling like they were almost on another planet.

I also like the way the reader was made to feel a sense of fear of the possibilities the adventurers were too naive to feel.(less)

Does anyone think Tschick had any intention of going to Wallachia? “All we had was a map of Berlin. “Maps are for pussies,” said Tschick. “Wallachia was in Romania, and Romania was south.” (It’s not)

What’s the significance of the blinds? “The blinds were ancient. I’d had them since I was three. We’d moved five times and still they’d always been there.” It seems like an odd detail to include. Also an odd thing to happen, unless it’s common in Germany to take your blinds when you move. Do they have standard size windows or something?

If they are inside (material: wood, metal, textile) they belong to the furnishing and as such to the tenant. So yes, you typically take them with you. Window sizes are probably somewhat standardized, but there are many different sizes.(less)
