Is there a particular historic reason why the necromancer is regularly referred to as being Greek? Greece at that time would be christian Byzantium and pre-christian Greece had many tales about visiting the dead in the underworld. Any historic background that Greeks were associated with necromancy by Arabs?

No, the Greeks weren't known for that. This is just one bad apple who has experimented with forbidden arts, and he happens to be from the Byzantine Empire. Our heroes probably would have referred to them, technically, as Romans, but I used Greeks because that's what we're used to. (less)
