Is this book appropriate for a mature 12 year old?

Henry Matter It features a fair amount of rape and murder so if your 12 year old is into that then sure.

I need to use this book as a very fleeting example to compare something to in an essay (barely a sentence) so don't need to read it all yet (but intend to one day) so could someone just let me know if it is the religious characters who are the wrongdoers in the text or not?

Does anyone know any other deliciously horrible novels like this one? Some that I have already been recommended and have read are: Melmoth the Wanderer, ALL of Ann Radcliffe’s books, Zofloya, Caleb Williams, and Vathek. Any others?
