Are there any decent female characters in this series? (I've read some pretty awful things about the treatment of women.)

The question is a bit like asking 'are there any interesting male characters?' about a Veronica Marrs book?
As for 'pretty awful treatment of women.'
I do not recall anything happenning to women that was not matched by something similar happenning to male characters.
And I do not think women had it particularly easy in ancient China in any case.
Let alone in an 'ancient China that never was."(less)
