Does this book Shardik maintain the same level of enjoyment as Watership Down?

It starts off really good, but peters out about halfway though. However, it's worth your time for the questions it raises about man's relationship with God/religion. Are we truly following God's will or is He following ours? Or neither? Has its slow moments (as did Watership Down) but a good book overall. Don't expect any talking animals. I also highly recommend Girl in a Swing (totally different). Even better.(less)

Maps and geography are obviously an important part of this book. The river Telthearna, the Saint Lawrence? Bekla, Washington DC? The Yeldashay, American Southerners? It might be ridiculous but it's always fun to speculate.

I have a theory about the final chapter twist... Siristrou = Zoroaster. Shardik the bear = his introduction to the idea of monotheism. Or am I on the wrong track?
