When Barber was offered 10k bride in his reporter days,he was ambitious to do thru his investigation and also a honest man,he didn't take it.Then he was framed for NOT taking the bribe,spent 3+ years behind the bar without any fault and when released he was jobless. So he was bitter,helpless and when you become that your moral will not be at high point,and then it's easy to get in a trap like that.Also if you read the novel carefully,he was offered the DA job AFTER he entered in this 50K-offer from those two women.(less)
