I'm about halfway through. I love the descriptions of fantastic worlds, but I kinda hate Corwyn and want someone to take him down a couple notches. Does the story get any better, or will Corwyn stay a Mary Sue forever?

I wouldn't say Corwyn goes through any major internal character arcs in this book. In my opinion as well, he is kind of insufferable and remains us until the end (of this book, I haven't read the full series). While bad things do happen to him after the halfway point, nothing really changes him internally.
That being said, personally I still quite enjoyed the story, though I tend to like following unlikable characters in general. So I think it comes down to personal preference. (less)

Anyone else notice similarities between the opening of Nine Princes and John D. MacDonalds' Nightmare in Pink, Travis McGee #2, published 1964 (about 5 years before RZ wrote 9P)? In both, the first-person protagonist is kept in a drug-induced mental haze in a hospital in upstate New York. He happens to emerge from the haze and makes a violent escape.

Unanswered Questions (1)

Where is it that Corwin (or maybe Merlin) quips something like "It was just one damn thing after another", on a shadow walk watching two fantastic animals chasing each other? I think it's in the first book but I can't find it.
