How important is it to have read the previous two books in the quartet? I've read Byatt before so I'm at least familiar with her style. Came across this book in my parent's house and thought I might just jump in. Any advice?

I actually think it provided a better experience because as you read you can tell there's more history there between the characters, but the author doesn't leave you high and dry, you eventually figure everything out even without having read the other books.
