I last read these books in high school, 45 years ago, and I started with commodore Hornblower this time. So, one can read this book on its own, but it’s a more satisfying read if you’ve read at least some of the earlier books and gotten to know the characters. Consider watching the Gregory Peck movie, at least. Even better is the A and E series. (less)
