On the other hand, each book is enhanced by its predecessors, and the reader will find it easier to identify with the hero if they are all read in chronological order of events. (The chronological order of writing is quite different but can help one to imagine the way the author gradually develops the character of Hornblower and explains the technicalities to new readers.)(less)
