It uses a lot of language that is unfamiliar to both modern audiences and those of the 1920s. There are many nautical terms and detailed descriptions that relate to ships of the 16th and 17th centuries. The pacing is slow for the first half of the book; then it has a brief interlude that is fast-paced and includes graphic violence, but then it slows down again at the end. It is a pirate adventure where the pirates don't capture the main character until the book is almost finished.(less)
