Diamond Dogs is basically a "dungeon crawl", known from Dungeons & Dragons-style roleplaying games; and it is very heavily inspired by the Cube films in its specifics. Tthere's actually a direct reference to the Cube films in Diamond Dogs, in the dreams Childe feeds to Swift. Also a reference to Indiana Jones there, heh.

Ernest Cline's "Ready Player One" and Scott Meyer's "Magic 2.0" books have some of the same idea, with deadly puzzles in virtual space, but hardly have the same tone and execution.

I think the "deadly puzzle" is a quite common theme in itself, but right now I can't recall any SF books that specifically use the trope like Diamond Dogs. (less)
