Bernie had already been forgotten, "buried" in that prisoner camp, and Barbara was an irrelevant woman who had kept a relatively low profile and whose relationship with Bernie was unknown but for very few people, Maestre not being one of them. I thought "maybe" Aranda, the camp's director, wanted some kind of "revenge" (What for?) and decided to organise this game, but I hardly doubt he would go through all this trouble when he had hundreds of ways to make Bernie's life miserable, way less risky than planning this escape gone wrong. Don't think that Agustin would have accepted to be hit so hard if nobody would blame him for the escape, anyway. Many plot holes that make the book less serious.(less)
