I've been wondering why this was set in 1999 (with bleed-over into 2000) when it was published in 2011? Why set it a decade into the past? Y2K was a very minor subplot, so I can't imagine that was the sole reason (or even a very strong one).

I think she did an effective job of capturing that era without hitting us over the head with "It was the 20th century....not everyone had a cell phone then!" The Y2K plot point was also paralleled in the lives of all the main characters because something very significant occurred within a week or two of New Year's.(less)

Beth mentions that she was in 8th grade when she saw a music video for Here's Where the Story Ends by The Sundays. However, this book takes place in 1999 and Beth is 28. That song came out in 1990. Am I losing my mind? She would have been 19 or so when that song came out, right?? HELP.

Is this anything like Elanor & Park? Not to be rude but I was disappointed to find so much language in only the first few pages that I don't want to read this if it's the same. Thanks! :)

If you want something more similar to Eleanor & Park, I'd suggest reading Rainbow Rowell's book "Fangirl."

But I would also add - Eleanor & Park definitely has language (the f-word is in the first couple pages if I remember correctly) and some more mature themes (sexual harassment, child abuse/neglect, alcohol use, bullying).(less)

Hey! lots of people say this book is creepy. But is it creepy because it is trying t be creepy, or is it creepy in an effort to show just romance ? I guess what i mean is it the kinda creepy the twilight movie is (where if somebody watches you while you sleep without you knowing it is romantic and not sick) ?
