Can this book be read as a stand-alone or do I need to read the very first book in the series?

Sarah My first reads from the series was out of order (I read book #2, "Dying Light" and the short story collection "The 45% Hangover", which sits at #7.5) …moreMy first reads from the series was out of order (I read book #2, "Dying Light" and the short story collection "The 45% Hangover", which sits at #7.5) and I really enjoyed them both. However, I have since returned to read the series from the start (#1 Cold Granite) and have gained a much better handle on the recurring characters' relationships and backstories. In short, I feel that the books read well as standalone police procedurals, but the series-level character development really takes them to the next level in terms of reader enjoyment.(less)
