In his hands it is a joy to read, and I thoroughly recommend switching immediately.(less)

A major theme of the book is the emergence of Judaism and monotheism, and Mann paints a compelling picture of the ancient Near East, and the many pantheons and mythologies that inhabited it. But primarily it is a book about belief, at no point those God come down from the heavens, or does anything expressly supernatural occur.(less)

I have just posted a question before ordering the book, so my answer is just from scripture without the novel's context.
In Genesis Chapter 37, Joseph is sent by his father, Jacob, to Dothan, to help his brothers with there flocks. And then there is this description:

"15 Then a man found him, and behold, he was straying in the field, and the man asked him, saying, "What are you looking for?"
16 And he said, "I am looking for my brothers. Tell me now, where are they pasturing?"
17 And the man said, "They have traveled away from here, for I overheard them say, 'Let us go to Dothan.' " So Joseph went after his brothers, and he found them in Dothan.
18 And they saw him from afar, and when he had not yet drawn near to them, they plotted against him to put him to death.
19 So they said one to the other, "Behold, that dreamer is coming."

I'm not sure that it's relevant, but I saw your question and decided to look it up. Hope it's helpful(less)
