More scattershot thematically, but imagery even more vivid - his descriptions of a fantastical New York City at the dawn of the 20th century ... well, I've never experienced anything like it. There are scenes everywhere throughout that I consider to be the finest I've ever read. Gets pretty loose in narrative - a good quarter of its massive size is pretty unnecessary - but it's just so damn beautiful.(less)
