What reader's age is the content appropriate for?

Morgan Stewart I read Duncton Wood to my son when he was eight, but I skipped the part where Rebecca is raped by her father. He liked the story.

Could anyone tell me whether these books are similar to Watership Down, or closer to Redwall? I am trying to peg whether these feel like children's books, or whether there is more of a mature feel to them. Thanks!
