Somewhat confused and distracted by the several sections throughout the book in italics. I read up on this & sources stated it's to differentiate between language usually used by Chinese or understood by them and what English language speakers are saying. But, in several instances, the Chinese character Moon Shadow or other Chinese characters are speaking & their words are in italics...Explanation?

When Moon Shadow, Windrider and (occasionally) Uncle Bright Star use English, their dialogue is also italicised. This is why when the Company speak together, the dialogue is not italicised, but when Moon Shadow then translates the conversation for Miss Whitlaw and/or Robin, it is.

You can chart the growth in skill of Windrider's and especially Moon Shadow's English by keeping a close eye on their italicised dialogue.(less)

Joshua Pray You do not. I read Dragonwings with my middle school English students without having read any of the others. Each story is meant to stand alone.
