Personally, I think EMPIRES AND BARBARIANS is the best, with the most up-to-date conclusions, the deepest collection of evidence, and the topic you're least likely to read about elsewhere.

They are all works of popular history, with both 1) an overview of available evidence, and 2) Heather's conclusions. My advice: look at a chapters list and read the others if they touch on information that you're after.(less)
