All this would have been bad enough if he was just an ordinary man but his position demands he marry a nice "pure" young woman who can give him an heir, and that can never be her, so before his marriage to Virginia it causes a lot of anxiety to his family that he is too enthralled to her to do his duty and find an appropriate match.
