Has anyone ever spotted a rather obvious historical discrepancy in this book? Just before John Mills is punished, Byam expresses a hope that flogging will one day be abolished "in His Majesty's Navy". But by the time he's supposedly writing his account - the early 1840s - it's HER Majesty's Navy! (Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837.)

I've seen at least two editions of this book with a final section that has Byam, after leaving Tahiti, chancing upon Pitcairn Island and re-encountering his old hammock man Alexander Smith. One of them was an abridged version put out long after the trilogy had been completed. Anyone know why this portion was subsequently dropped? No edition I can find now contains it.
