I keep wondering why this series hasn't been made into a movie, TV series or mini series. Surely we have the CGI technology. Has this series been forgotten? I am currently rereading it and recommending it to my grandsons. I like the tone of the stories in that the plots revolve around overcoming hardships and adversity. The characters are pretty well fleshed out and you can see them in your mind's eye.

But as with other book-to-movie adaptions *cough cough* Eragon *cough*, Hollywood tends to ruin fantasy series movies, unless they're done very skillfully and they keep close to the books.(less)

Is this book series appropriate for a 12 year old to read? If you don't think so, could you advise why not? I'm not concerned about violence so much as sex, drugs, excessive or gratuitous violence - that kind of thing.
