I began with the Jane Whitfield series, and then I sought out everything Perry wrote. Jane's background as a native American underwrites her work to save people who are under threat. Usually they know something that makes them a risk to evil doers. Jane must extract them, protect them, and teach them how to hide. She is a one person U.S. Marshall service. The Butcher's Boy is a stone cold killer with principles. He is not a good guy, but he is not a really bad guy, either. His twisty character is why the stories are good. Lee Child's Jack Reacher is mostly about the muscle, although his thought processes provide structure to all the action. Sandford's Lucas Davenport is a legal killer. He solves crimes, but it is because he likes hunting, and killing—do you suppose that is why that series always has "prey" as part of the title? I prefer Sandford's Virgil Flowers series, where Flowers incorporates humanity into his crime solving. Perry writes a lot of stand alone novels as well. I have loved every one I have read, and just wish he could live and write forever. I recommend him as a fresh pleasure to someone who appreciates Child, Sandford, and Ii don't really know Peter Tremayne.(less)
