His concern was that some types of "education" were impractical, especially for those who had just left slavery. Also, some people saw education as a way to avoid hard work. He saw it as a way to make hard work more fruitful.
His goal for education was to have each person be competent in trades, so that they would bring value to their community. This would ensure that they could earn a living, and foster goodwill with their neighbors.(less)

N…moreUnfortunately, in today's society there are not too many people who have the same love-imbued spirit to the black community as Booker T. Washington. Nevertheless, there are some African-American figures who have demonstrated great love: Cornel West and Umar Johnson. Cornel West advocates for love and caring about those who suffer the least in society (minorities). Umar Johnson offers a similar approach as Washington when he says that every penny he receives from the black community, it goes right back out into the community. He acknowledges the idea that "what must be done for black people must be done by black people." He hopes to keep alive the legacy of his ancestor Frederick Douglas, along with the legacy of Marcus Garvey and Booker T. Washington. In conclusion, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Dubois, or Booker T. Washington are incomparable because of their magnificent contributions to public service. (less)
