I hope you found those 20 pages in the last year because it would be terrible to have to rely on a summary. I was spellbound in the first few pages by Mitchison's amazing ability to share the minds of her characters. But if you still haven't gotten your hands on it, the book opens in the middle of Harn Der's plot to bewitch, depose and kill the Corn King, Tarrik, using the magic powers of Harn Der's young daughter Erif Der. By the time the book opens, Erif has already partly bewitched Tarrik, interfering with his performance at the Spring festival (prior to the action of the book), causing him to fall in love with her and making him erratic and volatile. In the coming year, the family looks forward to Erif marrying Tarrik and then causing his death, setting the stage for her family to take power in the kingdom. (less)
