My grandfather's best man (who looks rather thin and warn in the formal wedding photo) died two days later of the influenza. It's a story that's been passed down in our family by my grandpa and then my mother. The wedding photo has always had a rather haunting quality for me ... knowing, from the distance of time, what would be the fates of many of the individuals pictured there. (less)
