Part 2 of my comment: Everyone who makes tea for the detectives serves it in little china cups with roses on, and gold rims. Women still, in the 21st century, rush to church on Sundays clutching their hats against the wind. The crime stories are quite good but why do I feel that reading them is a waste of my life?

Part 3: His time across the Atlantic shows up a lot - a Yorkshire shop assistant is called a 'store clerk' etc, very annoying. Try the Dalziel & Pascoe books - a million times better-written, very funny, stuffed with little references which don't matter if you miss them, and a detective you really want to meet. Sadly there will be no more as Reginald Hill is dead, but Robinson isn't fit to wipe his shoes. Agree?

How is it that I have read so far into the series? (Answer - because someone passed on the whole set). Robinson is a sloppy writer, and doesn't seem to be bothered about it. He writes fulsome praise for his editors etc in the books, but what do they do? Ignore inconsistencies, ignore straighforward errors, ignore sudden personality changes between books, ignore typos ... I could go on,
