I thought maybe it was just another hilarious way the author shaped the father’s brilliant yet quirky character. His father had such depth to him - but he was not a man to lower himself to utter common obscenities. His intellect and respect for his wife just couldn’t suffer that. But he certainly felt vey strong emotions! From anger to frustration to disbelief, the father just had to let it out! So he created a phrase which, for him, embodied all of the emotions that others might have lazily expressed with cuss words.
