There's a sense of humans unknowingly orchestrating their own doom which is somewhat applicable to alternative and even contemporary catastrophes such as climate change (contemporary to the time as well as now, as there were already plenty of anxieties around industrialisation and man's impact on the planet). I would argue that the slavery of the newts and their proposed use as a mine of raw materials is much more to do with mankind's colonisation of the natural world rather than a straight Nazism allegory.(less)
