The writer here is a British officer who travels through the South and into the North. He observes slavery but doesn't condemn it outright. He's very much a man of his times with prejudices against the Irish (He observes the NYC Draft riots first hand) He's NOT a deep thinker and ends up predicting that Confederacy will eventually win the war. This was after he'd witnessed their little setback at Gettysburg first hand. (less)
