I'm a little embarrassed asking this, but at the end she said that she told her foster mom that "she would never tell." What was it that she would keep secret for her?

Barb I believe that she was referring to the incident at the well

The foster mother says, "Where there's a secret, there is shame, and shame is something we can do without." What is the shame? Is she alluding to something shameful that happened in the girl's home, possibly with her father?
