Ellen initially strangled her, which made her believe she was the one who killed her. Marco comes along right after her and defiled her body and puts his hands on her neck to keep her quiet (he tells the whole story in the end) which causes her actual death. It does state in the end that Kate had a brain bleed so if she wouldn't have been strangled she would have died from the brain bleed, which would have been Ellen's fault completely.(less)

I know that Natchez Burning is the beginning of a trilogy which includes the Bone Tree and then one more to be released in 2016. I loved Natchez Burning!(less)
