I love Laura Kinsale and I enjoyed a lot of this book, but I could not figure out one plot point: was it ever explained why the French agents were spying on Merlin to begin with? How would they have known she had something worth spying on? Any help on this point would be appreciated.

I assume he was correct and that is how the french knew because as far as I can tell there is no other way.(less)
