Did anyone find this book incredibly petty? The author seemed to analyze all of the characters -- flaws and weaknesses. He would skewer Hemingway and Scott -- and then say "but I really liked them". I ended up having no respect for Morley Callaghan. I desperately wanted to like the author -- and then just ended up feeling sorry for him. Jealousy of others talent is tragic - did anyone else feel this way?

I never felt Callaghan was disparaging their talent--in fact I think he felt he wasn't as talented as either one--but rather observing that despite their talent each man had demons that plagued them mercilessly and warped their relationships with others.
