Some of what happens in the Mercy Thompson books have been touched upon in the Alpha and Omega series and Charles and Bran have appeared in Mercy Thompson series.

The two run kind of parallel to each other, so I'd say you don't have to wait before reading this book. They're connected in the same universe, but don't really effect each other too much from what I recall.

I did recently read through all the Mercy Thompson books recently in honor of the newest book (as of this comment), Smoke Bitten, and am rereading through this one. So far, the two aren't too connected outside of context and Charles and Bran appearing in both.(less)

This is mostly to tell you how Anna, Charles, and the world change between 2 & 4.

The wolves have come out to humans, and very strict policies are down for werewolf behavior. This means that Charles as his father's enforcer has been killing even more often, and Anna is worried that this is sapping his spirit. From Charles's POV we see that he is haunted by the ghosts of some of the men he killed, because he thinks he killed them for political reasons, not because they deserved it.

When several werewolves are murdered in Boston, Bran sends Anna and Charles to help the FBI investigation (Adam would have gone, but Mercy was injured in River Marked and he won't leave her). A fae's daughter is kidnapped by what appear to be the same UNSUBs, and the hunt is on. Some of the gov't officials are good, and others are not.

Stuff happens (see, no spoiler!), and at the end Charles has defeated his ghosts, we see more of how terrified other werewolves are by him, Anna is more comfortable with their mating bonds and her strength as a werewolf, and the fae reject human justice and declare independence, severing most ties with humans. Bran wants to keep the werewolves with the humans for now, but there is a lot of prejudice (some of it obviously well-earned) against the supernatural community.(less)
