Alan and Gaby seem to have met in late 60's, early 70's (hippies, free love, open marriage are all mentioned) and then their son Thomas seems to have some 90's grunge style going on (long hair, flannels) Alan does research in a library - no internet is mentioned and no one is seen with a cell phone of any kind.
