Does this actually have zombies in it, like it says in the genre tag?

Pauline Not classic zombies, but definitely something a bit like them, and the characters refer to them as zombies in the book.

Do I need to read the prequels before starting this book? I have started reading this book a few times and feel like I'm not following or missing something like I read book 2 of a series :-/ I have yet to make it through chapter 1; perhaps I need to keep reading?
