The rest of Roosevelt's achievements make this expedition a footnote in history. But wow - what a story - of one of the most poorly conceived and dangerous journeys in history. The author does a fantastic job of explaining what happened and also setting the scene, including the natural world passing by the expedition members, as the stumble their way along an incredibly treacherous river.
