Is this series getting any better and more focused, or is it all like "Red Mars"? For me the first book was a bit slow and distracting without a main plot or coherent storyline.

I felt like the first 1/2 to 1/3 was hard to get into but by the last half it was a little more focused than the first book. It still had a huge cast of characters and a similar format, though.(less)

How did they deal with the radiation problem? Early in Red Mars, it was discussed at length, and the earliest habitats were all underground for that reason. But by the middle of Red Mars, we've transitioned to surface cities with transparent tents, and more and more people are spending more time out on the surface in vehicles and suits. A thicker atmosphere will help, but it won't solve it.

They also had rad blocking clothing. But yes the gerontological treatment helped.(less)
