But the book is written for a contemporary audience who already knew a good deal about these people, and American political history from 1963 on is really important to understanding why Hunter and the Freak/Youth/Left scenes are so disillusioned with politics. To better understand that, I'd recommend a book like Rick Perlstein's Nixonland, that elegantly captures the era and its numerous conflicts.(less)
