It is long but it is a good introduction. Salem Possessed is an excellent book that focuses on the tensions in the community that led to a collective breakdown. The witchcraft crisis is a historical phenomenon that is about the projected fears of a particular culture. Hereditary witches who practice a spiritual tradition that predates Christianity are something else entirely. A good introduction to that subject is Starhawk's classic The Spiral Dance. (less)
