I just found this book second hand and decided to pick it up on a whim - can I read it without having read the earlier books in the 'Folktales' series, is it a standalone fairytale retelling?

Okay so what's up with the fish being illegal hallucinogens or whatever? Did it ever explain that? I mean I did read the book but I kind of skimmed a lot of the purple bits so I guess there could have been an explanation hiding in there somewhere. It's not really a plot point (I don't think) but it's bugging me SO MUCH. I mean, all fish are illegal drugs?? Seriously? It just seems so random.

Things that are sometimes on the ground but move e.g. people, land based animals are more prone to magic. Animals that fly are more prone still. Animals that swim are so prone that they've become a kind of taboo.(less)
