Islam as a religion is pure, it is the Muslims that are hypocritical in their interpretation of the religion. The two terms cannot be used interchangeably.

For Muslims who reject science as being "Western", illiteracy and ignorance plays an important role in formulating their ideas. They are ignorant not just about worldly affairs but also about their own religion.

On the other hand, the West has alienated the religious people from science by labeling them as backward and uncivilized. Many scientists now a days openly mock religion. One such example is that of Lawrence Krauss whose lectures on YouTube are rife with derision for religion and its followers.

The stark distance between religion and science in modern age is to be blamed on both sides - the ignorant believers and the arrogant scientists.(less)
