While I don't remember specific details, I do remember the graphic detail included in this book — there are lots of scenes where they depict the act of scalping and there are lots of acts of violence depicted throughout the book. I didn't particularly enjoy those parts, to be honest, and I was 14/15 years old. Honestly, I would focus on the parts that have to do with conflicting identity than the parts with the violence, because the conflicting identity that is a theme throughout the book is important for fifth-graders to understand — how do we identify ourselves? By the color of our skin or the environment in which we were raised? (less)
