Treason's Harbour, which I think is the ninth, would be a good introduction. Since the earlier books are easy to find, why not go back to the beginning? Master and Commander is not the best book of all, as the later ones are enhanced by earlier events and memories the reader has. I think I read nearly all about ten years ago, thought the very last couple fell off a bit. Now re-reading the series, not in order. It's even better the second time around. (less)

“it seemed that Jack had accused Wray or his associates, in terms only just ambiguous enough for decency, of cheating at cards. Wray did not ask for the barbarous satisfaction usual in such cases. It is possible that he understood Jack’s words to apply to some other player–Stephen had had no first-hand knowledge of the affair.” No first-hand knowledge? It was Stephen who spotted the cheating and alerted Jack, right?
