I've only read the first Dune. Should I be reading this one or is it better to read first the remaining books of the trilogy?

After reading House Atreides I decided not to read anymore of the new books... personally I found it absolutely atrocious, but even if it was half good, there's something to be said for keeping the history and wider universe a tantalising mystery.(less)
