Despite Eric Metaxas's best attempts, I don't think Bonhoeffer would be a card-carrying Republican, but he has a profound love for Jesus as saviour and redeemer, which is usually seen as central to conservative theology today. Yet, he's much deeper than most, without being inaccessible in his writing. Sometimes in reading the Cost of Discipleship, I found I could read a single line and stop. It was enough. I think every Christian (conservative, liberal, whatever) should take some time to wrestle with Bonhoeffer. (less)

Bonhoeffer was not a conservative Christian as the word is used now in America. Don't you think he would better be called a traditional or small 'o' orthodox Christian? I love his quote: "Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin then about courageously and actively doing God's will."

just read a review of charles marsh' bio written around same time? the reviewer mentioned and i was horrified and disgusted that eric metaxas supports donald trump. yuck. i was raised evangelical xtian and am no longer a believer. bonhoeffer would in no way support trump if alive today...trump exemplifies the antichrist (that i don't believe exists but which evangelicals do.) ... the OPPOSITE of christ. "sad"?
